Mini Work Station/Lapboard and Structure Kits.

MINI WORKSTATION/LAPBOARD

Use it on your lap while watching TV, while talking with the family, sitting in the sun, etc.

This work station is a temporary, relocatable work station for miniaturists, but can also be used for other small craft work. It is not meant to replace your regular work desk.

(Mine has, because there is no room on my regular work place. LOL)

It has the potential to have a number of different sized holding bays. The pictures below show some different ways that miniaturists have set up their own personal boards.

As each miniaturist uses different tools and techniques, each also uses the features to their own liking and advantage. I see it as something you would load up with the tools and supplies you need to work on a particular project, while doing any of the activities above, so a lot of what is on it would be ever changing!

FEATURES:

  • Approximately 19” wide x 15.5" deep.
  • With spare dividers you can make up to 10 various sized holding bays.
  • Large working area - approximately 10.5” wide central work area, where you can fit a small cutting board, tile, etc.
  • The rail at the back of the board can be drilled to hold your files, paint brushes, or any round ended tools that you use.
  • The space immediately in front of the back board can be used for holding long pieces of strip wood, wires, or anything long and cumbersome, as the ends are open to allow for overhang.
  • If you don't work with wood, but maybe beads, that area will hold 13 film canisters, in which you can store small parts.
  • The area down the right hand side has five holes, which could be used for water, paint, glue, some tools, or other items of your own choosing. Removing the containers gives five small holding bays that could be used for tiny items. These holes are drilled to fit most craft paint bottles.
  • Picture hangers can be fitted on the left side for you to hang ribbon, string, cotton, or anything of a long limp nature.
  • The right hand side section could be made with it on the left hand side instead, for left-handers.
  • You could glue a piece of foam to the base if you wanted it to be more non-slip, but I don't have any problem with slippage with mine.
  • The size is suitable for working in 1:24 scale, or smaller, for making furniture pieces, and 1:12 scale and smaller, if making most accessory items.

WHAT YOU GET:

The unpainted basic board with some compartment spacers in place and some loose. The dividers that are left loose are for you to place where you choose, giving you compartment sizes specific to your needs.

There are no holes drilled in the back beam, as everyone has different requirements for these.

N.B . This is not a precision tool! It has not been made to precise measurements, and is not by any means a master craftsman item. It has been designed to do a job and in that end it is a very efficient tool. Before you use the ‘lapboard’, I would recommend that you paint it and then give it a coat of a good clear lacquer. This will save the surface from any stains that might happen from spillages.

The first image below, on the left, is an example of how the lapboard can be set up to suit your own needs and the one on the right is the unpainted model, as it is sold. (Sometimes this can vary slightly). There are three extra spacers for each of the long side compartments for making some smaller compartments.

The other lapboard images are examples of how several purchasers of the lapboard have set them up for their own purpose.

Lapboard is AU$32.50 in Australia plus shipping.

Stocks are available in the USA! Updated information on stock arrivals and prices for US buyers can be found in the 'LOOK' page!

My own lapboard!

“I love my lapboard!!  The compartments are perfectly designed for organizing my jigs, paints, glues, tweezers, and other supplies and keeping everything accessible in a small space. I've customized it with the extra wood pieces to suit my working style, and there's still enough flexibility to accommodate a wide range of projects. The large flat surface holds all the items and parts I need, and the edges keep those small items from rolling or flying off when I transport it from place to place, as I do, frequently. Now I can work while I watch TV or chat with my family--and then clean up quickly when company comes!!  Thank you, Virginia!”

Frances Sussman, Maryland, USA.

“I just love my lapboard/mini workstation from Virginia Paton.  I had it while travelling and it made it possible to not only work on miniatures right in my hotel bed, but also right behind the sales table.  At home it makes it possible for me to work in any room in the house.  I can easily join my husband in the living room to watch TV while working on my miniatures.  It keeps my Xacto from rolling off my workstation, too.  I can't tell you how many times I have risked my feet by having it roll off my work desk.  Another thing that I really like about my workstation is that I can leave a project laid out and just put the whole lapboard aside instead of having to pack the project away. I think everyone needs one!”

Laura Miller, Arizona. USA.

I use mine on a table - or to be more precise on a number of tables - using the board to make my workplace 'a moveable feast'. I have made some modifications too...

The latest one though was to glue a narrow strip of metal to it as a
magnetic gluing jig of sorts. I also cut a self-healing mat to fit
the working surface.

This is my original lapboard!

One evening, while I was making minis using a flat piece of board on my lap, I got desperate, as things kept rolling away, falling off, or tipping over. I took the piece of board that I was using, went to the shed, got some old strips of wood from the offcuts and glued them strategically around the board to hold different parts that I was working with. This was very rough and the dividing strips were all different sizes. It served it's purpose and I got the items made that I needed urgently.

It worked so well, that I decided to fine tune it, give it a lot more thought, get suggestions and opinions from others, and make them to sell!!

AND HERE THEY ARE!
